Hello everyone. I'm 34 and have been smoking for about 12 years. Yesterday I decided to quit on a whim. I did good for a while with the patch and gum "only if needed" but today the cravings got the best of me and I smoked a cigarette that I don't even like. I feel like a failure. I have COPD. I'm hoping that this group can help me to quit, relate to others and when I can try to help others quit as well.

It's hard to quit cold turkey. However, it is possible.

The thing you must remember is that you will have a physical need to hold a cigarette for days after you stop smoking (and/or weeks afterwards). Try to do something constructive with your hands/fingers to help you change that behavior when that need challenges you.

Also, smoking creates a mental addiction. It's a drug and it affects the chemical equation in your brain. The thing to remember here is that it is only temporary. This "need" will pass in a few days.

Quitting cold turkey can be done. Just go moment to moment. Don't beat yourself up if you cave in. Just try to do better with the next moment.

Good luck! :)

I have tried to quit cold turkey, with the patch & with the gum. I start chantix monday. I only know of one way to do this and that is to have faith in myself & God. I felt like a failure when I didnt get it right either. The best thing is, we can give it our best shot as often as it takes. I would be happy to help you through this. I also need support. God bless you
